Diabetes monitoring made easier

Diabetes is one of the most increasing body ailments in the modern world. Reports say that, India will be the Diabetics capital of the world. Now a diabetic patient has to go through a lot of pain for check up and some have to go through it on a daily basis. Well, one thing is for sure, what I believe is the field of medicine has always been supported by Engineering. Doctor can do nothing until they have reports.

So what we have is another ingenious idea from Engineers this time it’s from India. A team from The Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai (IIT-B); The leader of the research is Prof. Rohit Srivastava and a group of students have developed an Implantable glucose Bio sensor using nanotechnology. Once injected the bio sensor would help monitor blood sugar levels for up to six months using an external hand held device.
The sensor is called as a smart tattoo; it appears like a dot in the skin when injected. The bio sensor has a dye attached with a glucose receptor; this receptor attracts glucose present in the fluid (blood), send signals to the handheld device in the form of infrared ways, just like your remote control, here the count is recorded. The sensor can be set in any region of the body and works with any kind of Diabetic ailment. A four year effort has been put into this involving animal trials etc.
The team has also applied for a patent through Intellectual Ventures .The report has been accepted and will be considered for review in December. The project was funded by Board of research in Nuclear Sciences at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center and the department of Biotechnology.

This innovation will help billions of people across the world suffering from diabetes and also help in real time analysis, which will help doctors and researchers across the world to find a permanent cure for this bad ailment.
